Tips for Coaching Girls Basketball

Coaching girls basketball is a fun and rewarding job, but even though the satisfaction you get from coaching may not necessarily come from winning, it is always best if you can coach a winning team.

Here are some tips to help you with your job of coaching girls basketball so that you can be winners, and team players.

Continually Challenge Your Team

When you are coaching girls basketball one tactic that works well is to issue challenges to your players. There are several ways you can continually challenge your team; you could make a deal with them that if they can hit points within a certain amount of time, then you will do something such as run laps, but if they can’t the team will be running laps. This is just an example, but there are several methods of challenging the players on your team.

Remember That Each Member of Your Team is an Individual

It only makes sense that if someone cares about what they are doing they will do it better. Although when you are coaching girls basketball you are coaching the team, each member of that team is an individual, with unique interests and lives. If each member of your team feels that they matter and that their coach cares about them as a person and not just as a team member, they will be more inclined to work hard.

Reward Your Team

If your team is doing a good job, reward them by telling them how well they are doing. If an individual on the team is working extra hard, let them know that you notice how well they are doing and appreciate it. Show your team they are doing well be rewarding them in other ways. If there is a team member that is doing well and putting in extra effort, let them off when the team is running laps. If the whole team is doing well, buy them all a health drink or offer some other type of reward.

Always Encourage Team Spirit

Although winning is great, when you win as a team it is even better. There is just something about a group effort and its rewards that can’t be beat. The more you remind your players that each and every one of them is important to the team, and it will take all of them for the team to become winners, the more each person will put into that effort. Coaching girls basketball is about pulling together a team that is also a family.

Teach, Don’t Punish

When coaching girls basketball it is important to remember that punishment against the team or individual players will do little good. Punishments such as yelling reprimands will do nothing but cause problems. Instead of doing this, when a player is not living up to what you feel she can do, use the opportunity to teach her how to recognize this. Most of the time when a player is not doing well it is due to a temporary problem at home, or they just don’t realize their own abilities. Your job is to teach them how to recognize what they can do first, and then teach them how to become a winning player.

Coaching girls basketball is a rewarding experience, but it is a lot of work. When you approach this job with the right mind set you will be amazed at what you can accomplish. Not only will you coach a winning team, but also you will create lifelong relationships and really make a difference in a girl’s life.
